CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s golf team has elected its first team captain, head coach Jan Mann announced on Friday.

Senior Michele Graham (Chesapeake, Va.) was selected as the squad’s captain. The lone upperclassman on the seven-member team, Graham took the program’s first-ever competitive swing in the match with Richmond on Sept. 7.

“Michele brings a great deal to our first-year program. She is a great athlete and a born leader,” Mann said. “Her academic experience at UVa is invaluable to our first-year student-athletes. She has been instrumental in making the adjustment from high school to college a smooth one for her teammates. With her determination and hard work, I am certain that Michele will break into the starting lineup very quickly.”

Women’s golf is the 25th intercollegiate sport at Virginia and began competition this fall. In two tournaments with nationally ranked competitors, the young Cavaliers have garnered Top 10 finishes in both outings.

The Cavaliers will participate in the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate on Oct. 19-21 in Knoxville, Tenn.
