CHAPEL HILL, NC – Two members of the Virginia men’s tennis team won singles matches in the first round of qualifying of the Omni-ITA Region II Championships Wednesday at the University of North Carolina. Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Burak Ahmed (Boca Raton, Fla.) each advanced to Thursday’s second round of qualifying.
Cohen beat Andreas Kulscar of American in straight sets, as did Ahmed in defeating Marc Ladouceur of UNC-Greensboro. In doubles action, both the teams of Ahmed and Cohen and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) and Stephen Rozek (Chadron, Ohio) each won first round matches before falling in the second round.
Cohen and Ahmed will continue to try to qualify for the singles main draw on Thursday as action continues.
