Virginia Men's Soccer Falls To UNC Greensboro, 1-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Virginia men’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the UNC Greensboro Spartans at the UNCG Soccer Stadium in a non-conference match. The Spartans’ Egill Atlason scored the lone goal of the match just 5:36 into the contest and UNC Greensboro held on for the 1-0 shutout victory over the Cavaliers. The loss was UVa’s first ever to UNCG in men’s soccer and Virginia remains winless on the road in 2003 with an 0-3-0 record in true road matches.
UNC Greensboro wasted little time scoring the first goal of the match and took an early 1-0 lead just 5:36 into the first period when Vincent Gianni and Randi Patterson connected with Atlason for a Spartan goal. Atlason’s goal would prove to be the game-winner as UNCG held Virginia scoreless for the match.
UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/Greely) made two saves in the loss, while UNC Greensboro’s Jay Benfield tallied three saves to preserve the shutout win.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 8-7-0 overall. The victory improves UNC Greensboro’s record to 8-6-2 overall. UVa is now 3-1-0 all-time against UNCG in men’s soccer.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Friday, October 31st when Virginia travels to College Park, Md. to face the Maryland Terrapins in an Atlantic Coast Conference match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 8:00 PM and will be played at Ludwig Field. UVa’s match with Maryland will be Virginia’s final ACC contest this season and will be the Cavaliers’ final regular season road game for 2003. UVa will close out the regular season portion of its 2003 schedule with a home match against the VCU Rams on Friday, November 7th at Kl?ckner Stadium.
