CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 7 seeded Virginia women’s soccer team tied William & Mary 1-1 Friday night and needed penalty kicks to advance in a first round NCAA Tournament match at Kl?ckner Stadium. The Cavaliers will host Villanova Sunday in a second round contest.
“I think we fought hard for the entire game,” stated Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “Sometimes you can get frustrated when you outshoot a team and can’t convert on your chances. I thought we handled it well tonight and we were just unfortunate to have to go to penalty kicks.”
Virginia (12-5-3) took control of the game early, outshooting the Tribe (14-6-3) 5-0 in the first half. The Cavaliers took advantage of one of those chances as Jamie Fabrizio (Carmel, Ind) blasted a shot from 18 yards into the upper corner off a pass from Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) in the eighth minute to give UVa the lead. That lead would stand through halftime until William & Mary tied the game shortly after the break. On their only shot of regulation, Katie Hogwood headed in a long free kick into the box from Anna Young to tie the contest.
Virginia continued to pressure the Tribe defense for the remainder of regulation and both overtimes, but had three balls saved off the goal line by the Tribe defense and hit two posts. Although Virginia outshot William & Mary 20-2 in the contest, penalty kicks were needed to determined who advanced.
After Gillian Hatch (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) had connected on Virginia’s first penalty kick, William & Mary’s Lindsey Vanderspiegel hit the right post to give UVa an early lead. Both teams converted chances in rounds two and three. In round four Hammond scored to give Virginia a 4-2 and Anne Abernethy (Atlanta, Ga.) saved Young’s attempt to end the game.
Virginia will play Villanova in a second game at Kl?ckner Stadium on Sunday. The Wildcats defeated Princeton 2-1 in the other first round game at Klockner Stadium. Game time for the second round match is 1:00 p.m.
