Men's Lacrosse Signs Nine Recruits

Charlottesville, Va. – University of Virginia men’s lacrosse coach Dom Starsia announces the signing of nine student-athletes to national letters of intent to play lacrosse at UVa beginning with the 2004-05 academic year.
The signees are: Will Barrow (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin), Kevin Coale (Lexington, Va./Episcopal), Drew Garrison (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan HS/Taft School), Ryan Kelly (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate), Derek Pilipiak (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), Jack Riley (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood), Ben Rubeor (Towson, Md./Loyola), Tim Shaw (Darien, Conn./Darien), and Mike Timms (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate).
Barrow, a 6-0, 175-pound midfielder from Baldwin, N.Y., is a two-sport standout at Baldwin H.S. He was named to the Long Island Empire State team and selected All-County last season in lacrosse. The speedy Barrow was also an All-Long Island football selection last season after catching 29 passes for 631 yards.
Coale, a 6-3, 215-pound midfielder from Lexington, Va., is a star football and lacrosse player at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va. He was first-team All-State and a Washington Post All-Met honorable mention lacrosse selection last spring. He is a two-year captain of Episcopal’s football and lacrosse teams.
Garrison is a 6-1, 180-pound attackman from New Canaan, Conn. He helped lead New Canaan H.S. to the state title last season with an unblemished 22-0 record. The younger brother of former North Carolina standout Austin Garrison, he was a high school All-American last season. Garrison also played on New Canaan’s hockey team. He is currently taking a post-graduate year at the Taft School in Connecticut.
Kelly is a 6-2, 195-pound midfielder/attack from Virginia Beach, Va. He has been a high school All-American the last two seasons at Cape Henry Collegiate School. Kelly has also been named the Player of the Year in the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools as a sophomore and junior. He also plays on his school’s soccer team.
Pilipiak, a 5-11, 195-pound defenseman from Ridgewood H.S. in Ridgewood, N.J., is another two-sport standout to sign with UVa. On the lacrosse field he was an All-Suburban defenseman the last two seasons. He is also a standout football player and was named All-League last year as a running back.
Riley, a teammate of Pilipiak’s at Ridgewood H.S. is a 6-2, 195-pound midfielder. He has been named to the All-State lacrosse team the last two seasons. Riley also is the quarterback on Ridgewood’s football team and was an All-League choice last season. Rubeor is a 5-11, 170-pound attackman from Towson, Md. He was an All-MIAA and All-Met performer at Loyola High School last season, finishing with 43 goals and 23 assists. A Free State All-Star in 2003, he also played football at Loyola.
Shaw is a 5-11, 195-pound defenseman from Darien H.S. in Darien, Conn. He was named to the All-Statelacrosse squad as a junior last spring. Shaw is also a standout tailback at Darien and rushed for more than 1400 yards last season.
Timms joins Kelly as UVa’s second set of high school teammates to sign with UVa during the early signing period. Timms is a 6-5, 225-pound defenseman from Virginia Beach. He was named first-team All-State as a junior last season despite missing part of the season due to an injury. Timms also plays on his school’s soccer and basketball teams.
“We are very pleased to announce the names of the young men who have recently signed their National Letters of Intent. This is a special group of athletes-strong and fast,” said Starsia in making the announcement. “There are a number who will contribute playing time early in their careers. They will help us get ‘up and down’ the field and challenge on the perimeter. Fans of the Virginia lacrosse program will enjoy getting to know these young men.”
