CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia men’s soccer players Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/Greely) and Matt Oliver (Waldorf, Md./DeMatha Catholic) were named to Soccer America’s Team of the Week for Week 12. Burke, a first-year goalkeeper, made his first appearance this season to Soccer America’s Team of the Week, while Oliver, a redshirt fourth-year defender, made his second appearance this season to the team after also making the squad earlier this season for Week 3.

Burke and Oliver have teamed together with the trio of John Hartman, Hunter Freeman and Jeff Tuman to provide a solid line of defense thus far in the postseason for the Cavaliers. After finishing the regular season portion of their schedule with a record of 8-9-2, the Cavaliers have reversed their fortunes in the postseason and have advanced past four postseason matches by turning in a record of 2-0-2 where the defense has allowed just one goal (a penalty kick) through those four matches.

Burke and Oliver’s play helped UVa advanced past Clemson on penalty kicks (3-1) in the pk shootout following a 0-0 tie in the ACC Quarterfinals, defeated Wake Forest 1-0 in the ACC Semifinals and then advanced past Maryland after a 1-1 tie on penalty kick (7-6) in the pk shootout to claim the 2003 ACC Championship. UVa then defeated Seton Hall by the score of 2-0 in the First Round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament.
