ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Virginia men’s and women’s diving teams completed competition in the Georgia Diving Invitational at the Gabrielsen Natatorium Sunday and Monday (January 4 and 5). Second-year Andrew Barber (Vienna, Va./Marshall) turned in the top performance for the Cavaliers on Sunday with a 13th-place finish on the one-meter board.
Barber finished 13th in preliminaries of the one-meter diving competition on Sunday with 261.80 points and missed advancing to the finals by just 15 hundredths of a point. Second-year Eric Kelley (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Christian School) placed 19th in the one-meter competition with 249.75 points. After finishing 12th in the three-meter competition on Saturday, fourth-year Pete Amstutz (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) was 27th on the one-meter board with 229.95 points.
Kelley was the lone Virginia diver to compete in Monday’s platform diving competition and he finished 20th with a school record 344.50 points in the men’s and women’s combined platform event. Kelley broke his own school record of 343.35 points set on November 23 at the 2003 Texas A&M Invitational.
In Sunday’s women’s three-meter diving competition, fourth-year Katie Prior (Dallas, Texas/Logos Academy) recorded UVa’s top finish as she was 23rd in the preliminaries with 343.35 points. Second-year Gretchen Haughey (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) placed 27th with 285.35 points, while second-year Patty Park (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) rounded out Virginia’s competitors in the three-meter diving competition in 31st place with 252.80 points.
The 11th-ranked Virginia men’s swimming and diving team returns to action on Saturday, January 11 at noon when it hosts 12th-ranked Tennessee at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
