WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Virginia men’s tennis team opened their 2004 season as play began Friday at the 2004 ACC Coaches Indoor Championships. The Cavaliers had a strong showing as four players advanced to the singles round of 16 and two doubles teams advance to the quarterfinals.
The two seeded Virginia singles players both advanced with second round wins after first round byes. Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.), the tournament’s No. 2 seed, rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 win over West Nott of Georgia Tech. Stephen Rozek (Chardon, Ohio), the No. 4 seed, advanced with a 7-6, 7-6 win over Peter Rodrigues of Duke. Two other Cavaliers won a pair of matches to reach the round of 16. Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) defeated Joao Paolo Bounassar of Florida State and Raian Luchichi of North Carolina in straight sets. Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) also won a pair of matches in straight sets, defeating Jonathan Janda of North Carolina and Zachary Rath of Georgia Tech.
In doubles, two Cavalier teams won a pair of matches to advance to the quarterfinals. Cohen and Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) defeated Matt Cloer and Jonathan Sucupira of Florida State in the first round before upsetting No. 2 seeded Dennis Mayers and Conor Taylor of NC State in the second round. Rozek and Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) also advanced defeating Janda and Brad Pomeroy of North Carolina and Ryan Johnson and William Noblitt of NC State.
The ACC Indoor Championships continue Saturday at Wake Forest.
