DURHAM, N.C. – The nationally-ranked Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams combined to win 20 of 26 events in sweeping Duke Saturday (January 24) at Taishoff Aquatic Center. The 11th-ranked Cavalier men won 11 of 13 events in a 145-83 victory, while the 17th-ranked UVa women notched a 124.5-111.5 win while taking nine of 13 events. With the victory, the UVa men improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while the Virginia women now stand at 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the ACC.
In the men’s win over Duke (3-5, 0-4 ACC), first-year Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie) was one of two Cavaliers to win two individual events as he took the 50 and 100 freestyles with times of 21.51 and 46.44, respectively. Imboden led a top four UVa sweep in the 100 free. Third-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.72 and he also swam to an exhibition win in the 500 free in 4:39.04.
UVa opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:35.82. Third-year Chris Cooper (Sparta, N.J./Sparta), first-year Rick Hancock (Pendleton, S.C./Pendleton), fourth-year Jon Haag (Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), and Brian Harrington (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) each swam legs on the winning relay. Cooper also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.23. In the second event, the 1000 free, third-year Brett Simon (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) earned his first collegiate win as he posted a time of 9:48.21. Fourth-year Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) won the 200 individual medley (1:54.26), while fourth-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) touched in 50.22 in winning the 100 butterfly. The Cavaliers also swept the two diving events with second-year Andrew Barber (Vienna, Va./Marshall) winning the one-meter competition with 309.38 points and second-year Eric Kelley (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Christian) taking the three-meter title with 289.05 points.
The Virginia women won the first four events in their 124.5-111.5 win over Duke (3-5, 0-4 ACC). Fourth-year Katie Prior (Dallas, Texas/Logos Academy) was the only Cavalier to win two events as she swept the diving competition. Prior won the one-meter competition with 237.30 points and took the top spot on the three-meter board with 260.33 points.
UVa opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.62. The foursome of second-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School), first-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence), fourth-year Cynthia Roller (Herndon, Va./Herndon), and first-year Jenn Beiner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) swam legs on the winning relay. In the 1000 free, first-year Rory Schmidt (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) led a one-two UVa finish with a time of 10:08.18 with fourth-year Betsy Downey (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) placing second (10:12.04). First-year Kimi Kelly (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Ursuline School) then won the 200 free in 1:53.86, followed by first-year Shannon Hogan’s (Northville, Mich./Northville) win in the 50 free (23.43).
Other event winners for the Cavaliers included: second-year Corey Berg (Hyde Park, N.Y./F.D. Roosevelt) in the 100 back (59.09) and second-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) in the 500 free (4:58.56). UVa also registered an exhibition win in the 200 free relay (1:38.32). Katie Ness led Duke with wins in the 200 I.M. (2:04.75) and 100 butterfly (56.82).
The Cavaliers return to action on Sunday (January 25) when they take on ACC rival North Carolina in Chapel Hill. The men’s meet begins at 1:00 p.m. with the women’s meet commencing at 4:00 p.m.
