CHARLOTTESVILLE – Four members of the Virginia women’s soccer team earned All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors from Soccer Buzz Magazine. Second-year midfielder Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) and first-year defender Becky Sauerbrunn (St. Louis, Mo.) were named to the first team, second-year midfielder Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas) was named to the second team, third-year defender Gillian Hatch (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) was named to the third team, and Sauerbrunn and first-year midfielder Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) were named to the All-Freshman team. In addition, Sauerbrunn was named Soccer Buzz’s Mid-Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year.
Hammond was a key part of the Cavaliers’ offense in 2003, leading the team in goals (12), points (30), and game-winning goals (6). Her goal and points totals were each the seventh highest in school history, while her game-winning goal total ranks second for a season at UVa She was also honored for her play with first team All-ACC honors while during the season Hammond twice earned Team of the Week honors from both Soccer Buzz and Soccer America, and ACC Player of the Week honors once. Hammond was a second-team NSCAA and Soccer Times All-American and is also one of 12 finalists for the Soccer Buzz National Player of the Year award.
Sauerbrunn made an immediate impact for the Cavaliers during her first season. She played every minute this year while anchoring a Virginia defense that posted nine shutouts and allowed just 0.82 goals and 7.0 shots per game. Offensively, Sauerbrunn recorded two assists during her rookie season. She has already been recognized for her play by the ACC, being named conference Freshman of the Year and earning second team All-ACC honors. Sauerbrunn became Virginia’s first NSCAA First Team All-American in a decade and is also one of 12 finalists for the Soccer Buzz National Freshman of the Year award.
Huffman was an integral part of the Cavalier midfield this season. She started 20 games on the year and finished the season with two goals and five assists for nine points. Huffman was already earned post-season accolades this year from the conference, being named first team All-ACC. She was also a second-team All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection by the NSCAA.
Hatch was another standout on the Cavalier defense this season. She played every minute of the season and scored a career-high two goals and seven assists on the season. A star in the classroom as well, Hatch was named a Scholar-Athlete All American by the NSCAA.
Foley was one of the Cavaliers’ offensive leaders in 2003 despite missing six games due to injury. She ranked third on the team in scoring with 17 points on five goals and seven assists. She was recognized with ACC All-Freshman Team honors for her play.
Foley, Hammond, Hatch, Huffman, and Sauerbrunn helped Virginia to a 12-5-4 record and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2003. They are five of the 17 Cavaliers on this season’s roster with eligibility remaining for next year.
