WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Virginia Cavaliers kept their record a perfect 6-0 on Super Bowl Sunday with a 62-61 come-from-behind win at Wake Forest.
“This year we’re constantly putting ourselves in this position,” said Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan on her team’s tendency to get behind early. “I was proud of our effort.”
The Cavaliers improved to 10-10 overall and 4-5 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons fell to 10-10 overall and 3-6 in the league.
In the first half, Virginia only led once, 4-3, as Wake Forest went ahead by 12, 25-13. The Demon Deacons held a five-point edge at halftime, 33-28.
In the second half, Wake Forest went ahead by 15 points, 47-32. Then Virginia whittled away to come within one, 52-51, with three three-pointers by senior Anna Prillaman (Midlothian, Va.). With 0:14.9 on the clock, junior LaTonya Blue (Baltimore, Md.) nailed the game-winning jumper to put the Cavs ahead for just the second time, 62-61. Wake Forest’s last shot bounced off the rim.
Blue paced Virginia with 16 points, while Prillaman added 15. Junior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) came off the bench to score 15 points.
“We know what it takes to win,” said Blue. “Everyone stepped up tonight. We stayed together as a team.”
Liz Strunk led Wake with 19 points, while Erin Ferrell added 15.
Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Wake, 41-33.
Virginia hosts Maryland Thursday, February 5, at 7 p.m. at University Hall.
