Greensboro, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference released its 2004 football schedule today. Virginia’s schedule features 11 regular season games, including six home contests. Starting times for all games will be announced later.
The schedule features six games against teams that played in bowl games this past season, including four against teams ranked in the final polls.
The Cavaliers finished with an 8-5 record last season and defeated Pittsburgh 23-16 in the Continental Tire Bowl.
Al Groh’s Cavaliers open the season with a Sept. 4 road game against Temple. The first-ever meeting between the two schools will be played at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles.
Following the opener, Virginia closes September with three consecutive home games-Sept. 11 vs. North Carolina, Sept. 18 vs. Akron and Sept. 25 vs. Syracuse.
Following a bye week on the first Saturday of October, the Cavaliers host Clemson on Oct. 7 in an ESPN Thursday Night contest. This is Virginia’s first Thursday night ESPN home game since a 1997 match-up against Auburn.
Virginia travels to Florida State for an Oct. 16 game against the defending ACC champion Seminoles and then to Duke for a game on Oct. 23. The Cavaliers have their final bye of the season on Oct. 30 before returning home for games against Maryland (Nov. 6) and one of the ACC’s newest members, Miami, on Nov. 13. The game vs. Miami is the Cavaliers first against the Hurricanes since losing to them 31-21 in the 1996 Carquest Bowl.
The Cavaliers end the regular season with two road games. On Nov. 20 Virginia travels to Atlanta looking for their second win in a row over Georgia Tech. The regular season ends with the annual clash against Virginia Tech on Nov. 27. Playing their first season in the ACC, the Hokies and Cavaliers meet as conference opponents for the first time in nearly 70 years. They faced each other 14 times as charter members of the Southern Conference from 1921-1936.
