GREENSBORO, N.C. – Six University of Virginia football players earned Academic All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team honors, Commissioner John Swofford announced on Tuesday. To be eligible, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the fall semester or have maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
Named to the 47-member team were Cavalier seniors Ryan Childress (Shawsville, Va.), Ryan Sawyer (Marietta, Ga.), and Matt Schaub (West Chester, Pa.), junior Chris Canty (Charlotte, N.C.), sophomore Connor Hughes (Williamsburg, Va.), and freshman Marcus Hamilton (Centreville, Va.).
Childress, Sawyer, and Schaub played in the fall as graduate students after receiving their degrees last spring. Childress earned his degree in government, while Sawyer earned his in religious studies. A second-team All-ACC honoree, Schaub graduated with a degree in economics.
Canty has a 3.00 grade-point average in African American studies. He earned second-team All-ACC accolades last season and received the Ned McDonald Award as UVa?s outstanding defensive player.
Hughes sports a 3.08 GPA but has not declared a major. The second-team All-American by SportsIllustrated.com was also a second-team All-ACC honoree.
Hamilton has a 3.60 GPA. He earned honorable mention freshman All-America honors from Rivals.com.
Virginia opens the 2004 football season at Temple on Sept. 4.
