The Game
Virginia stands at 12-6 overall and 2-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference in the 2003-2004 season. The Cavaliers are coming off a 91-78 loss to 19th-ranked Wake Forest (Jan. 31) in Winston-Salem, N.C. Maryland stands at 11-7 overall and 2-5 in the ACC. The Terrapins are coming off an 81-69 loss to N.C. State (Feb. 1) in College Park, Md.
The Series vs. Maryland
Maryland leads the series with Virginia 95-64 in a rivalry that dates back to the 1912-13 season. The Cavaliers snapped a three-game losing streak (and a nine-game slide at Maryland) with an 86-78 victory (Feb. 6) at Comcast Center last season. UVa completed the 2002-2003 season series sweep with an 80-78 overtime victory (Mar. 9) in Charlottesville. It marked the Cavaliers’ first season sweep of Maryland since the 1992-93 campaign.
Despite winning four of the last seven meetings, Virginia has lost 13 of the last 20 contests in the series with Maryland since winning five consecutive games between 1992-1994.
In the 2001-2002 season, the Terrapins won 91-87 (Jan. 31) in Charlottesville in the first meeting and 112-92 (Mar. 3) in the final game at Cole Field House. In 2000-2001, UVa split a pair of games with Maryland with each team winning at home. Virginia earned a 99-78 victory (Jan. 31) in the first meeting of 2000-2001 in Charlottesville. Maryland gained a split in the season series with a 102-67 victory (Mar. 3) in College Park.
UVa has won eight of the last 12 games between the two teams at University Hall and 12 of the last 18. Virginia is 40-36 all-time on its home court against Maryland, including a 23-15 record at University Hall.
Five of the Cavaliers’ last six wins over the Terrapins (1995, 1997, 2000, 2001 and 2003) have occurred at University Hall in Charlottesville.
This is the 57th consecutive season the Cavaliers and Terrapins have met (every season since 1947-48), Virginia’s second-oldest opponent in terms of consecutive seasons met. They have played 121 games in that span. (Virginia’s oldest opponent in terms of consecutive seasons played is Virginia Tech-69 straight seasons).
Freshman Starts
The Cavaliers lead all ACC schools with 25 starts by freshmen. Three different freshmen, Gary Forbes (16), J.R. Reynolds (6) and Donte Minter (3) have started games for UVa.
Snapped at 354
The Cavaliers’ streak of making at least one three-point field goal in 354 consecutive games was snapped vs. Wake Forest (Jan. 31). UVa missed all 12 of its three-point attempts against the Demon Deacons.
The previous time Virginia did not make a three-pointer in a game was on March 27, 1992 against New Mexico in the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament in Richmond, Va.
Ranked Teams
All six of UVa’s losses this season have come against teams that have been ranked in The Associated Press Top 25 Poll at one point during the season. N.C. State was ranked in the first three AP polls of the season. Providence is currently ranked 23rd, while Duke is the top ranked team in the nation. Georgia Tech is currently rated 15th, while Wake Forest is 16th and North Carolina is 17th.
