GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia fourth-year swimmer Luke Wagner (Englewood, Colo./Regis Jesuit) has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week as announced Monday (February 9). Wagner, who was also named the ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Week on January 28, won two individual events and swam on one winning relay in the ninth-ranked Cavaliers’ 177-61 victory over Maryland (February 7).
Wagner, a 13-time All-American, posted an ACC season-best time of 49.35 with his 100 backstroke leadoff leg on UVa’s winning 400 medley relay (3:20.31). He then registered a personal season-best time of 1:52.11 in leading a top-four Virginia sweep in the 200 individual medley. Wagner capped of his final collegiate dual meet by winning the 200 backstroke with a NCAA B time of 1:44.71. The time is another ACC season best for Wagner.
Wagner becomes UVa’s second repeat winner of the ACC’s weekly award. Second-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) is a three-time recipient of the honor in 2003-2004. Fourth-year Adam Kerpelman (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul’s School) and third-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) have both earned the accolade once.
Virginia will host the 2004 Men’s ACC Swimming and Diving Championships February 25-28 at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. Virginia will also host the 2004 Women’s ACC Swimming and Diving Championships February 18-21.
