ATLANTA, GA – Virginia suffered a 65-55 loss at Georgia Tech Thursday night.
The Cavaliers fell 12-11 overall and 5-6 in the ACC, while Georgia Tech improved to 12-11 overall and 3-8 in the league.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out by seven, 13-6, but the Cavaliers tied the game at 13-13 with 10:02 to go. UVa built its lead to six points, 23-17, but Georgia Tech came back and led by two at the break, 27-25.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets built their lead to 15 points, 48-33, with 9:02 to go. UVa cut the lead to four points, 59-55, with 35 seconds to play. Georgia Tech went to the free throw line to score the final six points.
“We had a chance in the second half to take the lead and do our job.” said head coach Debbie Ryan, “But we just didn’t do it. I have no excuses.”
Junior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) paced the Cavs with 14 points. Junior LaTonya Blue (Baltimore, Md.) had 12 points, while junior Kate Kreager (Oak Hill, Va.) chipped in 10.
All five Georgia Tech starters scored in double digits. Fallon Stokes had 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Megan Isom added 14 points and 11 boards. The Yellow Jackets went 17-36 from the line, but made 11 free throws during the final three minutes of action.
Overall, Georgia Tech out-rebounded Virginia 42-35.
“We’ve been on the road. Our players our tired, but you can’t let fatigue get to you,” Ryan added.
Virginia hosts NC State on Sunday, February 15 at 1 p.m. The REGIONAL SPORTS NETWORK will televise the game live from University Hall.
