The Virginia women’s lacrosse team will open up the competition portion of the 2004 campaign with a trip to the South of the Border Tournament on Saturday, Feb 14. The tournament, which is co-sponsored by both Duke and North Carolina, will take place in the Durham/Chapel Hill area and features over 30 collegiate teams as well as squads from Canada and Japan.

The Cavaliers, who advanced to the NCAA title game in 2003, have garnered a number of preseason recognitions, including being tabbed as the #2 team in the nation by both the laxpower.com and the Lacrosse magazine preseason polls. Virginia’s Amy Appelt has been selected as a “Player to Watch” by insidelacrosse’s Tewaaraton watch, and both Appelt and Cary Chasney were selected as first team preseason All-Americans and Meredith Lazarus and Kim Connors were tabbed as third-team preseason All-Americans.

Julie Myers, the Cavaliers’ head coach, was inducted into the IWLCA Victory Club at the organization’s convention banquet in January, recognizing her 100th career victory that she achieved last year against William and Mary.

Virginia will play its first regular season game on the road on February 22 at Vanderbilt. The Commodores have also earned nods in preseason polls and will be competing at the South of the Border Tournament as well.
