#4 Duke Blasts Virginia, 87-54

DURHAM, NC – Fourth ranked Duke claimed an 87-54 win over Virginia at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Thursday.

The Cavaliers fell to 12-13 overall and 5-8 in the ACC, while the Blue Devils improved to 21-3 overall and 12-1 in the league.

In the first half, the teams battled back and forth through the first 13 minutes of play before Duke went on a 13-2 run to close the half. The Blue Devils held a 10-point lead, 34-24, at intermission.

In the second half, Duke came out of the locker room on fire, building its lead to as many as 33 points.

Senior Anna Prillaman (Midlothian, Va.) and junior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) paced UVa. with 10 points each. Sophomore Tiffany Sardin (Chicago, Ill.) added nine points.

“I don’t think I have to motivate my players,” said head coach Debbie Ryan. “They don’t stop playing because things don’t go well. I have every confidence in them.”

Senior Alana Beard led Duke with 27 points.

Overall, the Blue Devils out-rebounded the Cavaliers, 38-26.

Virginia returns home on Sunday, February 22 to host Florida State at 4 p.m. In celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, all girls age 18 and under will be admitted to the game FREE.
