CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia snapped its four-game losing streak with a 75-61 win over Wake Forest in its home finale on Thursday night at University Hall.
“It was really important for us to win tonight, especially for our seniors,” UVa head coach Debbie Ryan said. “The team’s learned a lot from their experiences. Today we played better than we have in the last four games.”
The Cavaliers improved to 13-14 overall and 6-9 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons fell to 10-16 overall and 3-12 in the league.
“I thought our kids played hard,? said WFU head coach Charlene Curtis. “Virginia did a nice job of stopping us in transition.”
In the first half, UVa utilized a 19-5 run to take a commanding 31-16 lead with 6:08 to go. The Demon Deacons closed the stanza with a 10-2 run to close the gap to nine points, 37-28 at intermission.
“We started the game on fire,” Ryan added.
The Cavaliers kept a double-digit lead throughout the second half. Wake Forest came within seven points, 60-53 with 4:34 to go, but UVa then rebuilt its double-digit to lead to end the game.
Senior Anna Prillaman (Midlothian, Va.) paced UVa with 16 points, while junior Jocelyn Logan-Friend (Cheverly, Md.) added a career-high 15 points and game-high 10 boards for her first career double-double.
Liz Strunk led Wake with 25 points, while Cotelia Bond-Young added 12 points.
Overall, UVa out-rebounded WFU, 46-39.
“Virginia was a lot more aggressive at the basket and got more loose balls,” Curtis said of the rebounding.
Virginia closes out the regular season at No. 11 North Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. The Regional Sports Network (locally on Comcast) will televise the game live from Carmichael Auditorium.
