CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 41 ranked Virginia women’s tennis team won its third consecutive match and posted its second consecutive shutout, downing UNC-Greensboro 7-0 Saturday afternoon at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The win improves the team’s record to 9-2 on the season as they remain undefeated at home.
The Cavaliers took control early by winning all three doubles matches by a score of 8-1. Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Mariko Fritz-Krockow (Fairfax, Va.) won at No. 1, Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Shannon Stough (Hot Springs, Ark.) won at No. 2, and Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) and Dora Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) won at No. 3.
In singles, Virginia posted straight set wins in five of the matches to quickly clinch the dual match. Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Bruch won their matches at No. 5 and No. 3 without losing a game to increase the lead to 3-0. Then, Fritz-Krockow won at No. 2 to clinch the dual match. Dora Bechliwanis and Stough followed with straight set wins of their own at No. 4 and No. 6 to make the score 6-0. In the final match on the courts at No. 1, James won in a super tiebreaker.
“Today we focused well and played some quality tennis,” said Virginia head coach Phil Rogers. “It has been a good indoor season but we are excited to get outdoors where tennis is meant to be played.”
The Cavaliers will have a week and a half off before returning to action on their spring break trip to Texas. On March 9 the team visits SMU and on March 10 the Cavaliers are at TCU.
