The Virginia women’s lacrosse team got a hat trick and four draw controls from Courtney Young, a five-ground ball and three-caused turnover game from Kim Connors, and four goals from Amy Appelt, but the Cavaliers still fell to Syracuse 14-13 today in Charlottesville. The Hoos twice had a four goal lead in the second half but Syracuse’s Monica Joines assisted on the game-tying goal and then scored the game-winner as the Orangewomen came from behind for the victory. Virginia keeper Andrea Pfeiffer had 10 saves in the loss while Cary Chasney led all players with six draw controls.
Virginia jumped on top early as Young won the opening draw and drew a foul immediately. She converted the 8-meter for the early 1-0 lead. Connors won the ensuing draw and Virginia worked the ball to Appelt, who rolled the crease and scored, giving the Hoos a two-goal lead. Leigh-Ann Zimmer, who led all players with six goals, scored her first to pull the Orange within one on a crease roll. Chasney won her first draw and after an SU foul, fed Morgan Thalenberg who raced to the cage, scoring to push the margin back to two. Zimmer scored again on a run to the cage a minute later, keeping the margin at one.
A Pfeiffer save started the next scoring sequence as the Cavaliers cleared the ball and Chasney worked free in the arc, putting Virginia up by two once again. She won the next draw and took the ball to the cage where she was fouled. Chasney converted the 8-meter for her second consecutive goal. Caitlin Banks won the next draw and was fouled as she got to the restraining line. On the reset, she fed Young in the arc, who scored 13 seconds after Chasney to give UVa a 6-2 lead 11:39 into the contest, forcing the Orange to take a timeout.
Syracuse then went on a run, shutting out the Cavaliers for the remainder of the half. SU’s Melody Agnew picked up a loose ball in her offensive arc and fed a wide-open Paige Rasmussen to start the run. Just over a minute later Zimmer fed Agnew to pull the Orange within two again. A Zimmer run to the cage pulled SU within one, and then a Lillis goal with 2:41 to go in the half tied the game up again. The Orange won the final draw of the half and worked for a shot but a Nikki Lieb caused turnover and Elizabeth Pinney ground ball gave the Cavs a possession with less than 10 seconds on the clock, sending the teams to the break tied at 6-6.
The Orange won the opening draw of the second half but lost possession and Ashley Dodson scooped up the loose ball at the top of the arc. Banks got the ball at the offensive restraining line and drove in for the score, putting Virginia up 7-6 3:04 into the half. Chasney won the draw and took the ball upfield where she was fouled, placing her on the 8. Her shot was saved but Banks picked the ball out of the air and fed Young, who was wide open on the crease, for a quickstick to give the Hoos a two-goal lead. Young won the ensuing draw and the Cavs brought the ball upfield where Appelt rolled the crease and scored, putting Virginia up 9-6. Syracuse won the draw but Connors caused a turnover and scooped up the loose ball, hitting Jess Wasilewski in the midfield, who transitioned the ball upfield to Appelt, who scored 90 seconds after her last goal to give Virginia a 10-6 lead at the 37:18 mark.
Syracuse scored twice in 32 seconds as Lillis converted an 8-meter and Joines ran in from the 30, cutting the deficit back to two at 10-8.
The Cavaliers answered as Banks won the draw and Virginia took the ball upfield where Appelt fed Julie Hauser for a quickstick goal a minute after the Syracuse goal. A Chasney draw gave Virginia possession again, and Appelt scored on another crease roll to push the margin back to four at 12-8 with 18:55 to play.
Again Syracuse went on a 4-0 run, with Zimmer scoring three times and Lillis adding her third, pulling the teams even with 11:44 to go.
SU won the draw but Pfeiffer made a save on the possession, and Lieb brought the ball upfield to the top of the fan, where she fed Chasney, who scored with 9:53 to play, putting Virginia in front again at 13-12.
Joines then gained possession and the Orange worked for possession, and Joines hit a streaking Meghan O’Connell, who scored to tie the game with 5:55 to play. SU won the draw but the Cavaliers gained possession and worked for a shot, but Jen Kasel stopped the ball on the goal line on a free position and the Orange took the ball upfield where Joines scored at 56:47, giving SU their first lead of the game. Syracuse won the draw, but Connors caused a turnover in the far corner with one minute to play. The Cavaliers worked the ball upfield and were able to get off a shot in the final seconds on a crease roll, but Kasel made the save to preserve the victory.
Appelt’s four goals give her 121 goals, which moves her up to #6 all-time as she passes All-Americans Jenny Slingluff Levy and Jamie Haas. Pfeiffer now has 363 career saves and now ranks #5 all-time at Virginia, just ahead of NCAA Champion Kim Prendergast, who had 362 from 1990-1993.
Virginia returns to the road to take on in-state rival Richmond on Friday, March 5 at 3:30.
