#19 Virginia Falls To Old Dominion, 5-4

NORFOLK, Va. – Evan Chipman’s two-run double keyed a four-run third inning as Old Dominion defeated 19th ranked Virginia, 5-4, Wednesday evening at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. Junior pre-season All-American Justin Verlander picked up the win as he fanned ten in six innings.
ODU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third as Chipman doubled home Kenneth Gram and Eric Mesa. Steven Harris then singled home Chipman, and Derek James doubled home Harris. In the fourth inning, Allen Strick scored on a wild pitch from third.
Virginia got on the board in the fifth as Kyle Werman was hit with a pitch and later scored on Matt Street’s single. In the sixth, Matt Dunn led off with a walk, then scored on Werman’s single. Virginia loaded the bases with one out, but Verlander fanned the next two batters to get out of the inning.
In the ninth, with one out, consecutive singles by Joe Koshansky, Dunn, and Josh Darby loaded the bases against Dana Arrowood. Koshansky scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-3. Dunn came home on a sacrifice fly by Tom Hagan to make it 5-4. Donnie Smith then came on in relief and got a fly ball out for his first save of the year.
Josh Darby led UVA with two hits, while Evan Chipman, Brandon Carter and Steven Harris each had two hits for ODU. The Monarchs are off until Tuesday night, March 23, when they host VMI at 7 p.m. Virginia hosts North Carolina in a three-game ACC series beginning on Friday, March 19, at 7 p.m.
