Box Score

The Cavalier defense allowed visiting Appalachian State (1-1) only five shots and one short corner, all of which came in the second half, en route to a 3-0 shutout today at University Hall Turf Field. Katherine Blair, who came on in the second half, made four saves to preserve the shutout. At the other end of the field, captain Allison Flynn had the opening goal and Mia Link scored once in each half to lead the Cavalier offense as Virginia improved to 2-0 in 2004. Link’s two goals give her six for the campaign through the first two games, equalling her total from the 2003 season.

Ten minutes into the game, Abby Taylor intercepted a pass on the left side of the pitch and took the ball to the endline where she crossed it into the circle. The ball was batted loose by the Appalachian State defense where it popped out to a wide-open Flynn, who deposited the ball to the boards for the opening goal of the game at 9:07. The Cavaliers kept attacking, earning seven short corners in the first period, and narrowly missing a second goal when Erin Hayes brought the ball into the circle, drawing ASU keeper Kate Ryno out before dishing the ball off to Flynn. Flynn’s shot was saved off the line by Mountaineer Carrie Johsnon. Virginia got back on the board when Flynn brought the ball into the circle and shot the ball. ASU keeper Kate Ryno made the save, but Link stuck the rebound right back into the goal for a 2-0 lead at 31:12. The teams went into the break with Virginia holding a 2-0 lead.

Virginia survived a scare 20 minutes into the second period when Shannon Mayan intercepted a crossing pass from the deep defense at the top of the circle and went in on Blair, but Blair made the save on the initial shot and the ensuing scramble to keep the Mountaineers off the board.

The Cavaliers tacked on another goal as Megan Ponessa took a ball up the center of the field and laid it off for Link, who ran onto it and shot from a short angle on the right side, scoring her second goal of the game at the 64:41 mark, giving Virginia a 3-0 lead.

Virginia continues its homestand on Sunday, September 5 as the Cavaliers host Michigan State, the defending Big 10 Champions, at 1:00. The UVa-MSU game will be followed by a game between Miami and Davidson.
