FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The No. 14 Virginia Cavaliers are tied for seventh after the first 18 holes at the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Ironhorse Course at Vanderbilt Legends Club on Friday.
Second-ranked UCLA leads the 18-team field with a one-over 289. Texas is second, two shots behind UCLA, with defending team champion Georgia third with a 292. Virginia is tied with NC State with a 299 (+11).
Three individuals share the lead at two-under par. Alison Walshe of Tulane, Cassandra Kirkland of Arizona, and Perry Swenson of Texas each fired a round of 70. Another six golfers are just one shot back.
Playing in just her second collegiate event, freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Va.) paced UVa with a 73 (+1) to tie for 14th. Sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) follows by one stroke with a 74, while sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) shot a 75. Sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.) fired a 77, while sophomore Ashley Mayo (Aventura, Fla.) rounded out the team scoring with a 87.
Play continues on Oct. 2 with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.
