CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team opens ACC play with two road games. The first stop is Wake Forest on Thursday, Jan. 6 at 7 p.m. UVa then visits Georgia Tech on Monday, Jan. 10. The Regional Sports Network will televise the game at 7 p.m.
WINA Radio (1070 AM) will broadcast all games live with Jed Williams calling the action and Jay James on color commentary.
The Cavaliers, under the guidance of head coach Debbie Ryan, stand 10-3 after a 66-49 victory over South Carolina on Jan. 2. Senior Brandi Teamer leads the Cavaliers with 14.8 points per game while shooting 53 percent from the field. Senior LaTonya Blue follows with 10.7 ppg. Senior Jocelyn Logan-Friend adds 9.1 ppg and a team-best 7.1 rpg. UVa out-scores its opponents by +14.2 points and out-rebounds foes by +7.3 boards.
The Demon Deacons, under the guidance of first-year head coach Mike Petersen, stand 10-3 overall and 0-1 in the ACC after a 81-55 loss at NC State on Monday. Junior Cotelia Bond-Young is the team leader with 15.1 ppg. Junior Liz Strunk adds 14.2 ppg, and Porsche Jones rounds out the double-digit scoring with 12.7 ppg. Virginia is 54-2 against Wake Forest in series action since 1976. Last season, UVa swept the two-game series, winning 62-62 in Winston-Salem and 75-61 in Charlottesville.
The Yellow Jackets, under the guidance of second-year head coach MaChelle Joseph, stand 9-2 after a 74-49 win over Alabama-Birmingham on Jan. 3. Sophomore Stephanie Higgs leads the team with 14.5 ppg, while Chioma Nnamaka adds 12.5 ppg. Georgia Tech opens ACC play at Florida State (Jan. 6) before hosting Virginia. The Cavaliers stand 47-8 against Georgia Tech since series action began in 1979. Last season, the teams split the two-game series with each team claiming a home win.
