CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia third year midfielder Sarah Huffman (Flower Mound, Texas.) earned a pair of postseason national accolades on Friday. She was one of 11 players in the nation to be named a MVP by Soccer America Magazine and was named a first-team All-American by Soccer Buzz Magazine.
Huffman becomes the just the fourth player in Cavalier history to be named a Soccer America MVP, the first since Lori Lindsey was honored in 2001. Huffman joins Lindsey and Angela Hucles as the only Cavaliers to earn first-team Soccer Buzz All-American honors since the publication started their awards in 1997. Earlier this year, Huffman was named a second team NSCAA All-American, the VaSID State Player of the Year, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and Co-MVP of the ACC Tournament. On the season, she had four goals and a school record 14 assists.
Huffman was not the only Cavalier to earn recognition from Soccer Buzz. Fourth-year forward Lindsay Gusick (Livonia, Mich.) was named a honorable mention All-America after joining Huffman on the publication’s first-team All-Mid Atlantic Region team. In 2004, she lead the Cavaliers in scoring with 16 goals and seven assists for 39 points, the second highest point total in school history.
Three other Cavaliers were also named All-Mid Atlantic Region by Soccer Buzz. Sophomore midfielder Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) was named second team all-region after finishing second on the team in scoring with nine goals and 13 assists. Junior midfielder Kelly Hammond (Bowie, Md.) and senior defender Gillian Hatch (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) were named third team all-region. Hammond had 12 goals and four assists in 2004, while Hatch anchored a Cavalier defense that set school records of 14 shutouts and just 13 goals allowed.
Huffman, Foley, and Hammond are among the 16 players on this year’s roster with eligibility remaining for next year.
