CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia wrestler Rocco Caponi (Uniontown, Ohio/SVSM) was tabbed the ACC Wrestler of the Week after winning all four of his matches. Caponi led the Cavaliers to a first place team finish at the 2005 Virginia Intercollegiates State Wrestling Championships (VISWC) in Charlottesville by going 3-0 in the event to take first place, and helped pace UVa to a 25-13 victory over the VMI Keydets after posting a critical win in his bout in the 2005 Rumble on the River in Richmond, Va.
Caponi, a first-year 174-pounder, went 4-0 on the week after recording a fall, one technical fall and a major decision to go along with one decision. Caponi posted an 18-3 technical fall victory over James Madison’s Bucky Anderson, pinned George Mason’s Nick Webster at 4:56 and earned a 12-7 decision over JMU’s Brian Lambert en route to claiming the championship at 174-pound title at the VISWC .
Against VMI in the Rumble on the River, Caponi recorded a 14-4 major decision victory over the Keydets’ Jeff Sale to lead the Cavaliers to the 25-13 win.
By going 4-0 on the week, Caponi improved his record to 16-5 overall and 3-0 in dual match action. He has won four matches by major decision, three by fall and one by technical fall this year.
Caponi and the Cavaliers are back in action this weekend when UVa competes at the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. on January 14-15.
