CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team returns home to host No. 1 and defending ACC champion Duke on Friday, Jan. 14 in the ACC home opener. Tip-off for the teams’ only meeting this season is set for 6:30 p.m. at University Hall on the Regional Sports Network.
The first 500 fans to enter the gates at University Hall for Friday night’s game against No. 2 Duke will receive a miniature stress basketball. All youth basketball players (8th grade and younger), wearing their team uniform/jersey, will receive FREE admission to the game.
The Cavaliers then entertain Clemson on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. That game will also be televised by the Regional Sports Network. WINA Radio (1070 AM) will broadcast all games live with Jed Williams calling the action and Myron Ripley on color commentary.
Fans will receive free Foam Fingers, presented by State Farm, while supplies last. The game with Clemson also marks Camp Reunion Day. All women’s basketball camp participants and Cavalier Kids Club members are invited to a party following the game.
The No. 1 Blue Devils, under the guidance of 13th-year head coach Gail Goestenkors, stand 15-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC after a 88-67 win over No. 25 Virginia Tech on Sunday. Junior Monique Currie is the team leader with 17.3 ppg. Freshman Wanisha Smith follows with 12.1 ppg, while junior Mistie Williams adds 12.0 ppg.
Virginia stands 32-21 in series action with Duke. However, the Blue Devils have won the last nine outings. UVa’s last win over the Blue Devils was a 61-49 victory at University Hall on Jan. 30, 2000. UVa and Duke will meet only once during the 2004-05 regular season. Each of the last two seasons, Virginia has faced Duke when it held the No. 1 ranking in the country. Once again, the Blue Devils are the No. 1 team in the nation for Friday’s showdown at University Hall. On Jan. 9, 2003, UVa led the top-ranked Blue Devils throughout the game but lost at the buzzer on a questionable call, 60-59. Last season, Duke claimed a 63-52 win on Jan. 18, 2004. Each of those games were played at University Hall.
The Lady Tigers, under the guidance of 18th-year head coach Jim Davis, stand 7-6 overall and 1-0 in ACC play after a 78-65 win over NC State on Jan. 9. Junior Reggie Maddox is the only Clemson player averaging double figures with 10.3 ppg. Clemson hosts Florida State on Jan. 13 prior to visiting Charlottesville.
Virginia holds a one-game lead against Clemson in series action, 29-28. Last season, the Lady Tigers swept the two-game series with the Cavaliers, winning 58-55 at University Hall and 60-56 at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Riding an eight-game winning streak, the Cavaliers stand 12-3 and 2-0 in ACC play after two ACC road wins. Senior Brandi Teamer leads the Cavaliers with 14.7 points per game while shooting 53 percent from the field. Senior LaTonya Blue follows with 11.6 ppg. Sophomore Brenna McGuire adds 8.6 ppg.
