CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team saw its eight-game win streak snapped at the hands of No. 1 Duke, 87-65, on Friday night at University Hall.
The Cavaliers stand 12-4 overall and 2-1 in ACC play, while Duke improved to 16-1 overall and 2-0 in the league.
“I was real pleased in the first half with our offensive output,” said UVa head coach Debbie Ryan. “The offensive game we played was good. We just couldn’t keep it up in the second half.”
In the first half, the teams kept within three points of each other until Duke’s final basket of the half. The Blue Devils entered the locker room with a 44-40 edge.
“In the first half, Virginia did a great job. They got all the loose balls,” said Duke head coach Gail Goestenkors. “I was really disappointed in our effort and execution. We needed to become the aggressor.”
In the second half, Duke utilized a 15-5 run to take a 14-point lead, 61-47. The Blue Devils continued to build upon their double-digit lead, going ahead by as many as 25 points, 79-54.
“I’ve seen this team come back from 17 (points) down in three minutes,” added Ryan. “I felt we could get back on track.”
Senior LaTonya Blue (Baltimore, Md.) paced UVa with a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Senior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) followed with 16 points and seven boards.
“We were getting shots,” Blue said. “They just weren’t falling.”
Junior Monique Currie paced Duke with 23 points. Junior Jessica Foley added 20 points.
Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Duke, 41-37.
The Cavaliers host Clemson on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. at University Hall. The Regional Sports Network will televise the game live.
