PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The Virginia men’s tennis team continued play at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic Saturday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Cavaliers had one player reach the singles semifinals and one doubles team reach the finals.
In singles, the Cavaliers had three players in the morning’s quarterfinal round. Third-year Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.), ranked No. 19 nationally, defeated No. 120 ranked Nate Emgy of Kentucky 7-5, 4-2 (retired). Fellow third-year Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), ranked No. 36 nationally, lost a hard fought match to Catalin Gard of Mississippi, the nation’s top ranked player, 7-5, 7-6. Third-year Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) also was downed in the quarterfinals, falling to No. 58 ranked Roger Matalonga of Arizona, 6-2, 6-0.
In the singles semifinals later in the day, Stewart was defeated by Pedro Rico of Pepperdine, the No. 13 ranked player in the country, 6-1, 6-2.
The Cavaliers dominated the singles backdraw, with three of the four remaining players. First-years Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) along with third-year Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) all advanced to the backdraw semifinals.
In doubles, the team of Devvarman and Huey advanced to the final with a 9-8 win over Konstantin Haerle and Ben Harknett of Rice. In the other semfinal, the No. 18 ranked team of Matalonga and Colin O’Grady of Arizona topped the No. 19 ranked team of Rizza and Meythaler.
The tournament concludes on Sunday.
