KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The nationally-ranked Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both remained unbeaten with victories over Tennessee and LSU Saturday (January 15) at the UT Student Aquatic Center. The 10th-ranked Cavalier men defeated 15th-ranked Tennessee 135-103 and LSU 161-74. The 15th-ranked Virginia women registered a 126-111 win over host Tennessee and also downed LSU 163-78. With the victories, the UVa men improve to 7-0 on the season while the Cavalier women now stand at 8-0.
In men’s victories over Tennessee (3-2) and LSU (0-4), the Cavaliers won nine of 13 events in improving to 7-0 on the season. Fourth-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) had a hand in three event wins in the meet. Anderson won the 50 free in a season-best time of 20.12 and also touched first in the 100 free (44.68). Anderson wrapped up the meet by anchoring UVa’s 200 free relay that posted an exhibition victory with a time of 1:21.93. First-year Matt Targett (Victoria, Australia/Scotch College), who was also second in the 50 free (20.74), Brett Simon (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep), and second-year Greg Imboden (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie) also swam legs on the relay.
Second-year John Millen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) earned the Cavaliers’ first win of the meet as he led a top-three Cavalier sweep in the 1000 free with a time of 9:18.71. It marked the first of four top-three sweeps for Virginia. First-year Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) led UVa’s second one-two-three finish with a winning time of 1:51.82 in the 200 individual medley, while fourth-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) led two teammates to the wall in the 200 butterfly (1:48.48). Second-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/Split) touched first with an exhibition win in the 200 breast (2:01.58) to round out UVa’s top-three sweeps.
In the 200 backstroke, fourth-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) clocked a winning time of 1:48.87, while third-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) won the 500 free with a time of 4:28.32.
The Virginia women won six of 13 events in victories of Tennessee (4-2) and LSU (1-4) to improve to 8-0 on the season. UVa won both relays and four individual events with eight different swimmers contributing to the six victories.
The Cavaliers opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay with a season-best time of 1:44.43. Third-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School), second-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence), and first-years Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and Amber Bialas (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) each swam legs on the winning relay. Steiner also won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:15.77. Glover and Bialas also swam legs on Virginia’s winning 200 free relay that posted a season-best time of 1:33.95. Joining Glover and Bialas on the winning 200 free relay were second-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) and first-year Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland).
Bland was victorious in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.59, while third-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) won the 200 backstroke with a season-best and NCAA “B” time of 2:00.75. Third-year Elaine Bennett (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) rounded out UVa’s event winners with a victory in the 200 butterfly. Bennett led a one-two-three UVa sweep with a time of 2:05.59. She was also the runner-up in the 200 breast (2:19.19).
Virginia returns to action on Saturday, January 22 when it hosts Atlantic Coast Conference rival North Carolina at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. The men’s meet will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the women’s meet will start at 4:00 p.m.
