PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The Virginia men’s tennis team concluded play at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden by taking the doubles championship. First-years Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) won the doubles title Sunday at the prestigious event, dubbed “The Wimbledon of College Tennis.”
Devvarman and Huey defeated Roger Matalonga and Colin O’Grady of Arizona 8-2 in the title match. That Arizona team is ranked No. 18 in the country, becoming the second top 20 team that Devvarman and Huey upset in the tournament. In the quarterfinals, the duo upset No. 6 ranked Alberto Francis and Kris Kwinta of UCLA.
The Cavaliers also had success in the singles backdraw, producing three of the four semifinalists, both the finalists and the winner. In the backdraw semifinals, Devvarman downed No. 39 ranked Alberto Francis of UCLA, 6-3, 6-1. The other match was a battle of two Cavaliers, the Huey defeating Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) 6-3, 6-3. In the backdraw final, Devvarman topped Huey 7-6, 6-4.
The Cavaliers return home to open the dual match season in ten days. The No. 10 ranked Cavaliers host No. 59 Old Dominion on January 26 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Time of the match is 6:30 p.m.
