GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of Virginia swimmers Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./ Lawrence) and Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) have been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s and Men’s Swimming and Diving Performer of the Week, respectively, as announced Monday (January 17). This is the first time Steiner has received this honor, while it is the third time this season and the ninth time in his career that Anderson has received this recognition.
Steiner, a second-year, cut over two seconds off of her season-best time in the 200 breaststroke to win the event in the Cavalier’s double dual meet against LSU and Tennessee. Steiner’s time of 2:15.77 is an “NCAA B” qualifying time. Steiner also swam the breaststroke leg on Virginia’s winning 200 medley relay, which also swam a season-best time of 1:44.43. Steiner helped 15th-ranked Virginia remain undefeated in dual meet competition (8-0, 3-0 ACC) by beating LSU 139-95 and Tennessee 126-111.
Anderson, a fourth-year, led the 10th-ranked Virginia men to two dual meet wins last weekend in Knoxville, Tenn. The Cavaliers defeated LSU 148-84 and 15th-ranked Tennessee 135-103 on January 15 at a double dual meet hosted by Tennessee. UVa stands at 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.
Anderson won three races in Virginia’s two dual meet victories. The All-American sprinter posted “NCAA B” qualifying times in both the 50 (20.12) and 100 freestyle (44.68). Anderson won the 50 free by over six-tenths of a second as he swam his fastest time this season. Anderson also anchored the Cavalier’s exhibition-winning 200 freestyle relay, which swam their fastest time this season (1:33.95).
The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action on Saturday, January 22 when they host conference rival North Carolina. The men’s meet begins at 1:00 p.m. and the women’s meet commences at 4:00 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
