CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team travels to No. 16/18 Maryland on Thursday, Jan. 20 for a 7 p.m. contest. The Cavaliers then host Dartmouth in the last non-conference contest on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. WINA Radio (1070 AM) broadcasts all games live with Jed Williams calling the action and Myron Ripley on color commentary.
Standing 13-4 and 3-1 in ACC play, Virginia has won nine of its last 10 games. Senior Brandi Teamer leads the Cavaliers with 14.4 points per game while shooting 53 percent from the field. Senior LaTonya Blue follows with 11.8 ppg and a team-best 5.3 apg. Senior Jocelyn Logan-Friend adds 8.7 ppg.
The No. 16/18 Terrapins, under the guidance of third-year head coach Brenda Frese, stand 12-3 overall and 2-2 in the ACC after a 95-91 overtime loss at Florida State on Sunday. Sophomore Shay Doron is the team leader with 20.6 ppg. Freshman Crystal Langhorne follows with 16.3 ppg, while freshman Laura Harper adds 13.2 ppg and a team-best 9.8 rpg. Sophomore Kalika France rounds out the double-figure scoring with 11.4 ppg.
Virginia holds a 39-22 series advantage of Maryland since the teams first met in 1997. Last season the squads split the two-game ACC series with each winning on its home court. Maryland claimed a 69-55 win at the Comcast Center, while UVa captured a 64-51 victory at University Hall.
The Maryland is also a homecoming of sorts as four Cavaliers will play in their home state of Maryland. Returning home for the last time are seniors LaTonya Blue (Baltimore), Jocelyn Logan-Friend (Cheverly), and Lynette O’Reggio (Bowie). Freshman Denesha Kenion (Oxon) will play in Maryland for the first time in her collegiate career.
The Big Green, under the guidance of 20th-year head coach Chris Wielgus, stand 4-7 overall and 1-0 in Ivy League play after a 73-70 win over Harvard on Jan. 8. Junior Jeannie Cullen paces the team with 13.5 ppg. Sophomore Elise Morrison adds 13.3 ppg. Dartmouth travels to Central Connecticut on Jan. 18 prior to visiting Charlottesville.
Virginia holds a perfect 2-0 series advantage over Dartmouth since the teams first met in 1981. In their last meeting, UVa captured a 71-68 win over the Big Green at University Hall in the first round of the 1995 NCAA Tournament.
