Virginia Cruises To 8-0 Shutout Victory Over Old Dominion

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs by the score of 8-0 at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. Virginia broke open a scoreless game in the fourth inning and took a 1-0 lead before tacking on seven runs in the final three innings to post its third shutout win this season. The Cavaliers’ Tom Hagan went 3-for-3 at the plate and recorded two RBI, scored two runs and hit two doubles, while pitcher Scott Morgenthaler (1-0) got the win after going 4.0 scoreless innings in relief while allowing just one hit.
“That was a big in-state win for us,” said UVa head baseball coach Brian O’Connor. “They (ODU) beat us down there (Norfolk, Va.) last week, and we have a lot of respect for them, they do a good job. Robert Poutier threw the ball pretty well in his first collegiate start. The story on the mound was Morgenthaler coming in and shutting them down for four innings. Tom Hagan carried the load for us, he had three hits and had a big day for us.”
Right from the start of the game, it looked like ODU would take an early lead. The Monarchs started the game off by loading the bases with no outs but were unable to score a run and stranded all three baserunners in the top of the first inning. Virginia’s starting pitcher Robert Poutier walked the first two batters, which was followed with an error by first baseman Josh Darby. However, Poutier retired the next three batters to escape the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Cavaliers scored the first run of the game and took a 1-0 lead when Tom Hagan connected on a double down the left field line before scoring a run one batter later on Scott Headd’s RBI-single through the left side. Hagan’s run and Headd’s hit eventually became the game-winners.
UVa held onto its 1-0 lead until the bottom of the sixth inning. There, Virginia stretched the lead to 3-0 by scoring a pair of runs. After Sean Doolittle singled and Joe Florio reached base on an error, Hagan had a two-run single up the middle to give the Cavaliers a three-run advantage.
Virginia’s Mike Campagna singled to start the bottom of the seventh inning and he advanced to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Werman. Campagna scored one batter later on an RBI infield single by Matt Street making the score 4-0. The Cavaliers added to their lead two batters later when Street scored to make it 5-0 on an RBI-single to right center field by Ryan Zimmerman.
Virginia’s Hagan added his second double of the game for the Cavaliers with one out in the eighth. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by ODU’s third baseman Justin Gregula. The next UVa batter, Campagna, also reached on a error by Gregula and scored a run on Kyle Werman’s two-run RBI-double to right center field increasing the lead to 8-0.
UVa starting pitcher Robert Poutier, making his first collegiate start, went 4.0 innings and allowed no runs on three hits and posted one strikeout in a no-decision. ODU starting pitcher Dana Arrowood (1-2) went 7.0 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits and struck out three batters in the loss.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 6-2 overall. The loss drops Old Dominion’s record to 5-5 on the year.
The Cavaliers will return to action on February 25-27 when Virginia hosts the Fordham Rams in a three-game non-conference series. The Cavaliers and Rams are scheduled to play on Friday, February 25th at 3:00 PM, Saturday, February 26th at 1:00 PM and Sunday, February 27th at 1:00 PM. All three contests are scheduled to be played at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
