Virginia Stands Seventh at Lady Gamecock Classic

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. – The Virginia women’s golf team stands seventh after the first round of competition at the Lady Gamecock Classic on Friday.
Thirteenth-ranked New Mexico leads the field of 12 teams with a 308 (+20), while No. 14 Louisiana State follows by a stroke with a 310 (+21). Host South Carolina is third with a 314 (+25). The Cavaliers shot a 320 (+32).
South Carolina’s Caroline Rominger leads all players with an even 72. Teammate Whitney Simons follows by stroke with a 73 (+1). New Mexico’s Kailin Downs is third with a 75 (+3). Five players, including UVa sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.,) are tied for fourth with a 76 (+4) each.
Sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) is tied for 16th with a 79 (+7). Freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Va.) follows with a 80 (+8), while sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) shot a 81 (+11). Sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) rounded out the Cavaliers’ scoring with an 83 (+13).
Second round action at the Lady Gamecock Classic begins on Saturday, March 12 at the University Club.
