WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – University of Virginia third-year swimmer Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) finished 29th in the 500 freestyle Thursday (March 17) at the 2005 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, which are being held at Purdue’s Boilermaker Aquatic Center.

Burke placed 29th in the preliminaries of the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:48.12. She was the only Virginia swimmer to compete during the opening day of the Women’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

Burke will also swim the 1650 freestyle on Saturday (March 19). The Cavaliers have two swimmers competing in Friday’s (March 18) preliminaries. Second-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) will swim the 100 breaststroke, while third-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) will compete in the 100 backstroke. White is the third seed in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.44 after earning first-team All-America honors in the event at last year’s NCAA Championships with a fourth-place finish.

The 2005 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continue Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. with day two preliminaries. Friday night’s finals begin at 7:00 p.m.
