Virginia women’s lacrosse player Kate Breslin scored twice and added an assist in the span of 13 seconds as the #7 Cavaliers broke open a close game against Loyola and held on for the win, 19-12 today (May 3) in Baltimore. Loyola (6-10) led 2-1 early in the game before Tyler Leachman sandwiched the first two of her eight goals around an 8-meter goal by Amy Appelt to take a 4-2 lead, but the Hoos (14-4) could not shake Loyola until midway through the second half. UVa’s Meredith Lazarus led all players with six caused turnovers and seven ground balls, while Leachman had eight goals and an assist to lead the Cavalier scorers. Appelt added four goals and two assists while Breslin also had four goals and added an assist.
After a Kate McHarg goal put the Hounds on the board first, a Ginger Miles save set up a tying goal as Virginia transitioned the ball upfield where Cary Chasney dumped the ball into Breslin, who scored to tie the game at 5:18. The Hounds went up again as McHarg converted a feed by Shuck just over a minute after the Cavaliers scored to put Loyola up again, this time at 2-1.
The Hounds threatened again, bringing the ball into the arc, but Ashley Dodson caused a turnover and Lazarus scooped up the ground ball to give the Cavaliers possession. Breslin beat out her defender to keep possession for the Hoos after an errant pass, and Virginia set their attack. Courtney Young fed a cutting Leachman, who tied the game at 2-2 at 9:27. Leachman took the draw and controlled it off of a Loyola foul, and she got the ball to Appelt. Appelt drove from the top and was fouled on her approach, giving her an 8-meter setup. She converted the free position shot and gave the Cavaliers the lead 43 seconds after Leachman’s first goal. After a yellow card was assessed to the Hounds on Appelt’s goal, the Cavaliers were awarded the ensuing draw. Virginia brought the ball upfield where they settled their attack briefly before Connors fed Leachman, who scored 31 seconds after Appelt to give Virginia a 4-2 lead. A Greyhound goal a minute later pulled the Hounds within one at 4-3 at 11:40.
Leachman won her fourth consecutive draw control and Virginia took the ball upfield where Breslin took from the top and scored to push the margin back to two at 5-3. Again the Hounds threatened in the arc, but a dropped pass was picked up by Nikki Lieb and Virginia brought the ball upfield where Young hit Leachman at 14:25, giving Virginia a 6-3 lead and forcing the Hounds to take a timeout. Loyola scored next coming out of the timeout to pull within two at 17:30, but the vaunted Virginia defense held the Hounds scoreless for the final 12:30 of the half.
That defense caused a turnover on the next Loyola possession as Breslin and Kim Connors forced an attempted clear outside the playing area, giving the ball back to the Hoos at their offensive restraining line. Appelt got the ball and took from the top of the fan, scoring at 18:26 to give Virginia a 7-4 lead. Lieb picked up a dropped Loyola pass a minute later and the Hoos got the ball to Leachman, who drove in from the restraining line and scored at 20:27. Loyola threatened again, but Dodson picked up a loose ball in the arc and at the other end Virginia settled the ball before Chasney dumped the ball into Lieb, who scored Virginia’s ninth goal at 22:21, giving the Hoos a 9-4 lead they tookinto halftime.
Loyola won the opening draw of the second half and brought it upfield, but the Cavaliers gained possession as Dodson picked up an errant pass and Virginia worked the ball upfield. The Hoos lost the ball briefly in the arc, but Lazarus tackled back and stole the ball in the Virginia offensive fan. She flipped the ball to Leachman, who scored her fifth goal of the game at 31:38 and extending the Virginia lead to 10-4. Maura Kenny scored off a feed from Shuck a minute later, and she scored her second consecutive goal four minutes after that as she scored a fast break goal off a feed from Sydney Greene to pull the Hounds back within four at 10-6 at 36:54. The Hounds brought the ball back into the arc on their next possession, but Lazarus drew a charge and Virginia brought the ball upfield. Out of the settled attack, Leachman drove from the top and scored at 38:18. A Kenny goal two minutes later pulled the Hounds within four at 11-7 at 40:47.
Young won the ensuing draw and and the Cavaliers settled their attack before Leachman scored her seventh goal off a drive from the top. Breslin won the draw and Virginia worked the ball to Leachman, who drew a shooting space foul and scored her eighth goal of the game, and fourth consecutive goal for the Cavaliers in the second half. A pair of Loyola goals from Greene and Shuck 1:30 apart pulled the Hounds back to within four at 45:35.
The Hounds won the ensuing draw, but Elizabeth Pinney immediately caused a turnover and UVa caught the Hounds going the other way. Appelt led Chasney with a pass to the top of the fan, and Chasney scored 19 seconds after Shuck to push the margin back to five at 14-9. A Loyola goal a minute later pulled the Hounds back within four.
The Cavaliers then exploded for three goals in 14 seconds, starting as Julie Hauser picked up a loose ball in the Hoos’ defensive arc and brought the ball upfield where she gave the ball to Breslin, who drove to the crease and scored at 49:03. Leachman won the draw and got the ball to Breslin, who worked a 2v1 with Appelt, who buried the goal six seconds after Breslin. Chasney won the next draw, and she pitched the ball up to Leachman, who fed a wide-open Breslin in the arc. Breslin’s goal at 49:17 was Virginia’s third in 14 seconds, helping the Cavaliers open up a 17-10 lead with 10:43 to play. A pair of Loyola goals 1:38 apart pulled the Hounds within five with 6:59 to play.
Breslin won the next draw and Virginia settled their attack. Appelt drew her defender and dumped the ball in to Young, who scored at 54:17. The Hounds won the draw, but Hauser caused a turnover in the arc and Dodson picked up the ground ball. The Hoos cleared the ball upfield and Lieb passed the ball to Appelt, who scored with 1:02 remaining in regulation for the final score of 19-12.
Leachman’s eight goals is the most for a Cavalier since Lauren Aumiller had eight in the Cavaliers’ quarterfinal win over Georgetown in 2003. She now has 55 goals on the season, which ranks tenth all-time in Cavalier history in a season. Her 129 career goals ranks her sixth on the all-time career charts for career goals. She also had seven draw controls on today’s game, increasing her lead on the team this season to 39, tying her for the ninth-highest total in a single season in school history.
Appelt’s six points give her 82 on the season, which moves her for the #7 spot all-time for a single-season in Virginia history. She now has 250 career goals and 110 career assists, and she ranks #6 all-time in Division I history in career goals and #11 in career assists. Her 360 career points is just 18 shy of the #4 spot all-time.
