Amy Appelt and Heath Miller Honored As UVa's Top Athletes

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Amy Appelt (women’s lacrosse) and Heath Miller (football) were honored as the University of Virginia’s top female and male athletes for the 2004-05 academic year at Virginia’s annual awards dinner Wednesday (May 4) at University Hall. Appelt received the IMP Award as the top female athlete for the second consecutive year and Miller received the WINA Award as the top male athlete.
Appelt, a senior from Garden City, N.Y., has 49 goals and a career-high 33 assists for 82 points this season. Her 33 assists and 82 points lead the team. For her career, she has 250 goals and 110 assists for 360 career points. Appelt’s 360 career points rank fifth all-time in Division I women’s lacrosse history, and she ranks in the Top 10 in career goals and assists. Her totals for goals and points rank first in Virginia women’s lacrosse history.
Appelt earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-ACC Tournament honors this spring, and is a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy awarded to the nation’s top player. She won the Tewaaraton Trophy last year, and is a three-time All-America and All-ACC selection.
Miller, a red-shirt junior from Swords Creek, Va., was a unanimous All-America selection and received the Mackey Award as the best tight end in the nation in 2004. He is Virginia’s first unanimous All-American in football since Jim Dombrowski in 1984 and he earned first-team All-ACC honors twice. Miller was a first round draft choice of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2005 NFL Draft.
A three-year starter, Miller rewrote the Virginia and ACC record books for receiving by a tight end, establishing career records for most receptions (144), yards (1,703) and touchdowns (20). Overall he finished second in Virginia football history in receptions, tied for fourth in touchdown receptions and seventh in yards receiving.
Todd Goodale, the director of video services in UVa’s athletics department, received the Bus Male Service Award for his years of service to Virginia athletics.
Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va.) of the men’s swimming and diving team and Gillian Hatch (White Bay, Wisc.) of the women’s soccer team received UVa’s ACC Scholar-Athlete Awards. Hatch also received the Jettie Hill Memorial Award as the senior female student-athlete with the highest scholastic average through her four years at Virginia. James Atchison (Charlottesville, Va.) of the men’s cross country and track and field team received the Gus Tebell Memorial Award as the senior male student-athlete with the highest grade point average through his four years at UVa.
Chefik Simo (Plano, Texas) of the men’s soccer team received the Craig Fielder Award for overcoming adversity and Matt Ward (Oakton, Va.) of the men’s lacrosse team received the Ralph Sampson Scholarship Award. Doug Brody (Charlottesville, Va.) of the men’s lacrosse team received the Virginia Athletics Department’s Distinguished Student-Athlete Scholarship Award and Bridget Bradley (Virginia Beach, Va.) of the women’s lacrosse team received the Ernest H. Ern, Jr. Award for outstanding contributions to student life at Virginia.
Dan Courain (Oak Hill, Va.) of the women’s volleyball team was the recipient of the Bob Goodman Memorial Award for his service to Virginia athletics as a team manager and Lauren Early (Roanoke, Va., football in fall, volleyball in spring this academic year) received the Tim Abbott Memorial Award presented to the assistant athletic trainer most dedicated to and possessing empathy for the student-athletes. Davon Robb (Hopewell, Va.) of the football team was the recipient of the Susan J. Grossman Memorial Award in recognition of outstanding service to student-athletes and contributions to the Student Athlete Mentor Program. Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va.) of the men’s swimming and diving team received the Life Skills Scholarship Award.
Virginia’s ACC Top VI Award recipients included Annie Bobiak (Media, Pa., women’s track and field), Bridget Bradley (Virginia Beach, Va., women’s lacrosse), Mary Dobmeier (Amherst, N.Y., women’s rowing), Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va., men’s swimming and diving), Meredith Lazarus (Stuart, Fla., women’s lacrosse) and Davon Robb (Hopewell, Va., football).
