CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s tennis team received the No. 2 overall seed as the 2005 NCAA Tournament bracket was released Wednesday afternoon. The Cavaliers will open tournament play at home as the Snyder Tennis Center will be the site of a regional on May 13-14. Virginia will play Richmond in the first round, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and William & Mary will play in the other first match in Charlottesville.
The Cavaliers (24-2) enter the NCAA Tournament on a school record 13-match winning streak. The 2005 ACC regular season and tournament champions have already tied the school record with 24 wins this season and the Cavaliers’ No. 2 seed is the highest seed ever for an ACC school in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Tournament. Last season, Virginia was the No. 6 seed in the tournament and also hosted a regional at the Snyder Tennis Center.
“We are excited to be able to host a regional again this season,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We have a competitive field coming here and we know it is going to be tough. Hopefully having two teams from the state coming here will create some large crowds and a great atmosphere for the regional.”
Richmond (16-6) enters the tournament on an eight-match win streak after capturing its second consecutive Atlantic 10 title. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi is making its first NCAA Tournament appearance after a 20-7 season in which they captured the Southland Conference title. William & Mary (11-14) has won five consecutive matches and enter the tournament as the CAA Champions.
The winner of the Charlottesville regional will join the winners of the other 15 regionals for the NCAA Championships May 21-24 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M.
