Virginia Softball Team Seeded Third In ACC Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The University of Virginia softball team is the third seed in the 14th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship, which will be held May 12-15 at the Terrapin Softball Complex in College Park, Md. The Cavaliers (29-30, 9-8 ACC) begin play in the seven-team double elimination tournament on Thursday, May 12 at 5:00 p.m. when they play sixth-seeded Maryland (24-19, 5-9 ACC) in game three of the tourney. It marks the second consecutive year UVa is seeded third in the tourney and opens play against Maryland.

Georgia Tech (45-11, 11-4 ACC), ranked 17th in the nation, is the top seed, while Florida State (32-22, 11-6 ACC) is the second seed. Virginia (29-30, 9-8 ACC) is seeded third and NC State (40-23, 7-7 ACC) is the fourth seed. North Carolina (36-25, 9-9 ACC) captured the fifth seed, followed by Maryland (24-19, 5-9 ACC) and Virginia Tech (38-20, 4-13 ACC).

The winner of the Virginia-Maryland game moves on to play the winner of the Florida State-Virginia Tech matchup at 11:00 a.m. Friday (May 13). The loser of the UVa-Maryland game drops to the lower half of the bracket and will play at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The Cavaliers have advanced to the championship game of the ACC Tournament four times in the last seven years (1998, 1999, 2000 and 2003). UVa has played in the championship game of the ACC Tournament seven times in the tourney’s 13-year history. Virginia won the 1994 ACC Tournament by defeating Florida State 3-0 in the title game.
