CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia freshman Sharnee Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) has accepted an invitation to the 2005 USA Basketball Women’s National Team Trials, USA Basketball announced on Tuesday.
The Trials, featuring 57 of the top American players, will be held May 19-22 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., and these Trials will be used to determine finalists for two USA teams- the U19 World Championship and World University Games teams.
The U19 World Championship team, coached by Duke’s Gail Goestenkors, will play July 15-24 in Tunisia. The 2005 World University Games team, guided by Harvard’s Kathy Delaney-Smith, plays August 11-21 in Turkey. Finalists for both teams will be announced following the May 22 trials session.
“Sharnee is so deserving of this honor,” said UVa head coach Debbie Ryan. “She will be a great international player. She brings so much to the court- leadership, running the show, setting players up to score. Sharnee will bring a presence to the point guard position that’s so necessary in international play.”
A 5-7 point guard, Zoll was named the team’s Rookie of the Year. The ACC Honorable Mention All-Freshman honoree also earned the Pre-Season Conditioning and Best Player in Practice Awards. Dishing out a freshman record 159 assists (formerly held by All-American Dawn Staley in 1989 with 144 assists), Zoll led the team in assists. She scored a career-high 20 points against No. 12 Minnesota in the NCAA second round.
