Cavaliers Draw Up Win Over Boston University 13-9, Advance to NCAA Semifinals

The #6 University of Virginia women’s lacrosse team rallied to defeat #3 Boston University 13-9 today (May 15) in Klockner Stadium and advance to the NCAA semifinals on Friday, May 20 where they will play Duke. Virginia (16-4) scored the final two goals of the first half behind Amy Appelt to take a 6-5 lead at the break, and in the second half broke six of 12 clear attempts in the second half to outscore the Terriers 7-4 in the second period. Nikki Lieb led the Cavaliers with six draw controls, eight caused turnovers, and eight ground balls, including four caused turnovers in the second half. Tyler Leachman had four goals and two assists, while Appelt and Cary Chasney both notched a hat trick. The Terriers (18-2) were led by Kaitlyn Cuneo’s two goals and one assist, while Mary Beth Miller also had three points on one goal and two assists.
Virginia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Meredith Lazarus won the opening draw and set it back to Ashley Dodson. Dodson switched fields and set it up to Courtney Young, who drove to the top of the fan and dished it off to Chasney, who was alone in the arc and scored 45 seconds into the game. After UVa won the next draw control, an Anne Sheridan save gave the Terriers possession where they took it upfield and attempted to set their attack, but Lieb intercepted a dump into the arc. The Hoos took the ball back upfield where in their settled attack, Chasney fed the ball to a cutting Leachman, who scored at 7:58 to give Virginia a 2-0 lead.
Ginger Miles picked up a loose ball in the arc on BU’s next possession and Virginia cleared the ball up to Kate Breslin, who in turn got the ball to Leachman. Leachman dumped the ball into the arc where Young scored at 11:19 to give the Hoos a 3-0 lead.
The Terriers rallied as Jenny Hauser dumped the ball into Lauren Morton at 14:46 to get BU on the scoreboard. Cuneo drove to the cage and scored four minutes later, and Alyssa Trudel tied the game as she took a feed from Miller from the side and quicksticked it into the cage at 21:44.
Virginia answered as Young dumped the ball into Leachman in the arc at 25:18, but BU again had an answer. Danica Strutt won the draw, and the Terriers attacked the cage, with Lindsay Lewis scoring on a drive across the arc to tie the game at 4-4. The Cavaliers won the draw, but BU gained possession as a shot ricocheted off the crossbar. At the other end of the field Cuneo converted a shooting space foul at 27:01, giving the Terriers a 5-4 lead.
Appelt won the draw, and the Cavaliers settled their attack. With 30 seconds to play in the half, Breslin fed Appelt, who was cutting across the arc. Appelt scored at 29:34 to tie the game. Lieb won the ensuing draw, but a clock malfunction forced a restart with Leachman in possession of the ball in the midfield. Virginia worked the ball behind the cage to Appelt, who rolled the crease and scored 19 seconds after her first goal to give the Hoos a 6-5 lead at the break.
The Terriers scored first in the second period, tying the game two minutes into the period. BU won the draw but Lieb knocked down a pass and picked up the ground ball. She carried the ball into the offensive third where she fed Chasney, who scored on the fast break to give Virginia the 7-6 lead at 32:26. Lieb won the draw and Virginia set their offense, but the Terriers gained possession and attempted a clear. Again the Cavaliers broke it as Leachman intercepted a pass and took it ahead before hitting Appelt, who scored 80 seconds after Chasney to give the Hoos an 8-6 lead. Kelly Trahon took a Miller pass to the cage to pull the Terriers to within one goal at 8-7 four minutes later.
Young won the draw and Virginia set their attack, where Leachman drew a shooting space foul. Her first shot was blocked, but she flicked the loose ball from the pitch into the cage like a hockey ball, scoring at 38:38 to put the Cavaliers up 9-7. Lauren Morton’s second goal of the game, again on a take from the top, pulled BU within one again at 9-8 with 18:42 to play in the game.
From here the Cavalier midfield and defense stiffened as Miles made saves on the next four BU shots. At the other end of the field, a BU clear was turned over at the restraining line and Lieb picked up the ground ball. She gave the ball up to Chasney, who drove to the cage before dishing the ball off to Leachman, who scored the Cavaliers’ 10th goal of the game at 46:18. A loose ball in the Virginia defensive arc was picked up by Miles, who started a transition that saw Chasney roll the crease at 49:39 to give the Hoos an 11-8 lead. Chasney also started the next goal sequence, picking up a ball in the midfield and taking it back into the Virginia offensive third to Appelt. Appelt took the ball into the arc, drew a double, and fed a streaking Connors, who scored at 52:51 to give Virginia a 12-8 lead. The Terriers were able to clear the ball over their defensive restraining line but a Lazarus caused turnover and ground ball gave the Hoos back the ball. At the other end, Breslin fed Lieb, who was cutting across the arc, for a goal at 56:35, extending the Virginia lead to 13-8. A Hauser dump into Trahon at 57:14 accounted for the final Terrier goal of the day.
With the win, Virginia improves to 16-4 and advances to their third consecutive NCAA semifinal. The Cavaliers are the only team that returns to the NCAA semifinals from the 2004 tournament, and they will face Duke approximately 8:30 on Friday, May 20. The game will start 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first semifinal, which features Northwestern and Dartmouth.
Leachman’s four goals give her 60 on the season, and she becomes only the fifth person in school history to notch 60 goals in a season.
