COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The second ranked Virginia men’s tennis team opens play at the 2005 NCAA Championships with a round of 16 matchup with No. 12 Washington Saturday. The Cavaliers and Huskies will meet at noon (CT) at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the campus of Texas A&M University.

The Cavaliers (26-2) are in the round of 16 for the second consecutive season. Virginia defeated Richmond and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last week in Charlottesville to advance. Washington is in the round of 16 for the fourth time after topping Oral Roberts and Southern Cal last week in Seattle.

“Washington is a great team that won the Pac-10 this year so we have a lot of respect for their program,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland at Friday’s pre-tournament press conference. “Their top four players are all lefties which gives them a different look. They have a lot of experience in their lineup, especially seniors at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. It should be a great college tennis match between two teams that have a lot of confidence coming into the tournament.”

The winner of the Virginia-Washington match will meet the winner of the UCLA-Tennessee match in the quarterfinals Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
