SUNRIVER, Ore. – Virginia finished 13th at the 2005 NCAA Women’s Golf National Championship at the Sunriver Resort on Friday.

Top-ranked Duke claimed the national title with a 1170 (+34), beating out defending national champion UCLA by five strokes. Auburn took third with a 1176 (+40).

The Cavaliers, making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA national championship, shot a 293, one stroke shy of the school record low round, for a 1200 (+64).

“I’m extremely excited for the team to finish 13th out of 24 against the top teams in the country,” UVa head coach Jan Mann said. “They played well the entire week.”

Individually, Duke’s Anna Grzebien captured medalist honors with a 286 (+2), beating out UVa sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) by just one stroke. Wigger fired a two-under 69 on the day for a 287 (+3). UCLA’s Annie Cochran and Duke’s Brittany Lang tied for third with a 288 (+4) each.

“I’m just so impressed with how she did,” Mann said of Wigger. “We’re very happy for her.”

Freshman Lauren Mielbrecht (Gulf Stream, Fla.) tied for 16th with a 296 (+12), while sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) carded a 304 (+20). Sophomore Sally Shonk (Noblesville, Ind.) fired a 315 (+31), and sophomore Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) rounded out the UVa scoring with a 326 (+42).
