Despite an NCAA Final game record six goals from Cary Chasney, the #6 Virginia women’s lacrosse team fell to top-ranked Northwestern 13-10 today (May 22) in Annapolis, Md. The Cavaliers and the ‘Cats traded goals throughout the first half, with Chasney scoring four goals and NU’s Kristen Kjellman scoring five, including the first five of the game for NU. Amy Appelt had a career-high five draw controls as well as a goal and two assists as Virginia (17-5) participated in the NCAA final game for the third consecutive year.

The Cavaliers got on the board first as Nikki Lieb picked up a ground ball in the arc and Virginia brought the ball upfield where Tyler Leachman drew a shooting space foul. Her shot went wide and Appelt picked it up before dumping the ball into Chasney, who scored at 1:26 to put the Hoos on the board. NU answered as Kjellman drove in from the top three minutes into the game, and then took a lead 17 seconds later as Emily Lovett won the draw, got the ball to Lindsey Munday, who in turn fed Kjellman for a goal.

Virginia tied the game after Lieb caused a turnover in the arc and Molly Urlock picked up the loose ball, starting a Cavalier clear. At the other end of the field, Chasney was fouled as she tried to pick up a loose ball. She converted the 8-meter shot to tie the game at 7:25. Northwestern went ahead again as Munday fed a posting Kjellman at 9:36 to give NU a 3-2 lead.

Northwestern won the draw, but a pass from the point was picked off by Appelt at the restraining line. Appelt took the ball uncontested into the cage and scored just 16 seconds after Kjellman to tie the game at 9:52.

The Cavaliers took the lead again as Appelt won another one of her five draw controls and Virginia settled the ball in their attack. The Hoos worked the ball around to Leachman, who drew a shooting space foul. Leachman converted the 8-meter shot, and Virginia led 4-3 at 10:09. The ‘Cats tied it up a minute later as Kjellman took a feed from Aly Josephs to the goal and scored.

Again Virginia went ahead after Miles made a save in the first half and Ashley Dodson picked up the ground ball. Dodson led the ball up to Kim Connors, who fed Kate Breslin, who carried the ball into the offensive zone. There, Meredith Lazarus dumped the ball into Breslin, who scored at 15:11 to take a 5-4 lead. And again NU tied it up as Munday again dumped the ball to Kjellman, who scored at 16:40.

Virginia again went up as NU won the draw, but Chasney caused a turnover and picked up the ball right in front of the Northwestern bench. Virginia settled the ball briefly before Breslin dumped the ball into Chasney, who scored 68 seconds after NU tied the game to take the lead again. Eight minutes passed but NU tied the game yet again as Annie Elliott fed the ball from behind up to Aly Josephs, who took from the top and scored at 25:55.

Northwestern won the draw and took it into their offensive arc, but Lazarus caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball to start a Virginia transition. Courtney Young brought the ball upfield and Virginia tried to set their offense, but the ball was checked loose. Chasney picked it up on the other side of the crease and took it a couple steps around before firing it into the cage to give the Hoos a 7-6 lead. A Sarah Albrecht take from the restraining line tied the game 14 seconds after Chasney’s goal, and then NU’s Joseph’s dumped the ball into Kristen Boege, whose bounce shot hit just under the crossbar at 29:02 to give NU an 8-7 lead. The ‘Cats won the next draw but Kim Connors drew an illegal pick with 13 seconds remaining in the half. Virginia cleared the ball, and Leachman shot as time expired, ending the half with the ‘Cats up 8-7.

Northwestern scored three goals to open the second half, with Albrecht scoring twice and Boege adding a goal at 41:35 to give the ‘Cats an 11-7 lead.

Virginia got the ball back with a crease violation, and Kendall McBrearty started a clear that saw the Cavaliers settle their offense before Leachman hit a wide-open Chasney in the arc, who scored at 44:10 to pull the Cavaliers within three at 11-8. A Munday 8-meter goal followed by a Josephs goal at 54:07 gave Northwestern a 13-8 lead.

The Cavaliers rallied, scoring twice in a 17-second span. Lazarus caused a turnover at the goal line extended, and Virginia cleared the ball upfield on a fast break where Leachman drove to the cage for a goal at 58:16. Lieb won the draw and was fouled. Virginia attacked, and Appelt drew a shooting space violation with Chasney alone on the other side of the cage. Appelt fed across the arc to Chasney, who scored her tournament-record sixth goal at 58:33. Appelt then won her career-high fifth draw control, but Virginia could not convert and Northwestern won the NCAA title 13-10.

Appelt, Chasney and Lieb were all named to the NCAA All-Tournament team.
