CHICAGO, Ill. – University of Virginia golfer Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) has earned Honorable Mention All-America honors from the National Golf Coaches Association, the NGCA announced on Monday.
Wigger led Virginia to a 13th-place finish last week at its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Women’s Golf National Championship. Individually, the sophomore finished second in the national tourney.
The All-ACC honoree is Virginia’s top golfer with a 74.21 average after 34 rounds. Starting all 11 tournaments, Wigger was UVa’s top finisher in 10 tourneys. In her short two-year collegiate career, the sophomore has eight Top 10 finishes. Named Virginia’s Golfer of the Year, she paced UVa with a second-place finish at the national championship and at the NCAA East Regional, where she fired a career-low round of 67 (-3). At the 2005 ACC Championship, Wigger claimed 12th while helping the Cavaliers to third place in just their second season (the team finished 7th of 7 in 2004).
Wigger also earned All-ACC honors, NGCA All-American Scholar accolades, Academic All-ACC honors, and Virginia’s Golfer of the Year honors in 2004 as a true freshman.
Wigger is a nominee for the prestigious Honda Sports Award given to the nation’s top golfer.
