COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Virginia men’s tennis assistant coach Tony Bresky was named the 2005 ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced their Men’s NCAA Division I national award winners at a banquet Wednesday night in College Station, Texas.
Bresky helped lead Virginia to a 27-3 record in 2005, setting a school record for wins in a season. The Cavaliers also set school records with a No. 2 national ranking and a 16-match winning streak. That streak ended with a loss to eventual NCAA Champion UCLA in the NCAA Quarterfinals, the farthest Virginia has ever advanced in the tournament. In February, Virginia became the first team to reach the finals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in its first tournament appearance. The Cavaliers also completed their first undefeated ACC regular season and won their second consecutive ACC Championship in 2005.
Bresky is in his third season as an assistant coach at Virginia. In 2004, he was named the ITA Mideast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. In his three years in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers have posted a 71-15 dual match record. Prior to coming to UVa, Bresky was an assistant coach at Indiana State when Virginia head coach Brian Boland was the head coach of the Sycamores. During his tenure at Indiana State, the Sycamores complied a 53-8 record and won two Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
