Four University of Virginia track and field athletes qualified for the finals of the NCAA East Regional meet, the second step in qualifying for the NCAA national meet, in competition held today at Manhattan College in Randalls Island, NY. Kellen Blassingame and Erin Crawford, two school record holders, both won their heats today while Shannon Hawrylo and McGavock Dunbar both advanced in their events as well to the finals, which will be held tomorrow (May 28).
Crawford, who holds the school record in the 400 intermediate hurdles, ran a 58.70 and won her heat to advance to the finals. Blassingame, who is the school record holder in the 400 open, also won his heat and will look to advance to the national meet. They will be joined in the finals on Saturday by Hawrylo, who ran a 4:25.54 in the 1500, and Dunbar, who ran a season-best 1:49.40 and finished second in his heat in the men’s 800m.
Competition continues tomorrow (May 28) with Inge Jorgensen and Annie Bobiak in the javelin, Billie Jo Grant in both the discus and the shot put, Tomika Ferguson in the triple jump, and the women’s 4x400m team competing in the finals, along with the four qualifiers from today.
