SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The USA U19 women’s basketball team rolled to a 89-69 win over Russia in the opening day of play at the 2005 International Sports Invitational, held at San Diego State University, on Wednesday.
The squad, coached by Duke’s Gail Goestenkors, will now face Australia on Thursday, June 9 at 6 p.m. PDT. Team USA finishes round-robin action with China on Friday, June 10 at 6 p.m. PDT. The tourney concludes on Saturday, June 11 with the Bronze Medal game at 2 p.m. PDT, and the Gold Medal game at 6 p.m. PDT.
Virginia sophomore Sharneé Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.), one of the 15 finalists for the USA Women’s U19 World Championship team, came off the bench for three assists, two points, and a rebound in six minutes of action.
Following the International Sports Invitational, the USA roster will be reduced to the official 12-woman roster. The U.S. team will then train on June 28-July 2 in Colorado Springs, Colo., and on July 3-6 in Washington, D.C., before playing two exhibition games in Hungary, The FIBA U19 World Championship is slated for July 15-24 in Tunis, Tunisia.
